Raina & Maria

Raina and Maria had been good friends since they started high school last year. Late one night, they were texting back and forth as they often did. Maria was venting, talking about a rough day. She sent a text stating that she was over her life and she “can’t take it anymore.”

This wasn’t like Maria. Raina didn’t understand what her friend meant. She was used to her venting, but she usually got over it. She texted Maria back asking if she was talking about killing herself. Raina anxiously awaited a response, but it did not come. She kept texting, no reply. She tried to call Maria, no answer. She called several times, but Maria didn’t answer.

Raina was growing more and more scared. What was going on with Maria, why wasn’t she answering? Was she thinking about suicide? Raina couldn’t sleep; she planned to find Maria first thing at school. She kept checking her phone but did not hear from Maria again that night or the next morning.

Raina went to school the next day and waited for Maria at her locker, but she didn’t show up. She asked others if they had seen Maria, no one had. She went to her first class and couldn’t focus. Where was Maria? Was she ok??

Raina ran to the office after first bell asking if Maria had arrived at school. The secretary in the office told her that she hadn’t come in yet. Raina tried to text Maria, and again, no response. She grew more and more concerned.

After second and third bells, Raina went to the office, and no Maria. Raina was frantic. Would her friend actually attempt suicide?

Finally, after fourth bell, Raina learned that Maria’s mom called and said Maria woke up last night vomiting with the stomach flu. Raina was so relieved to hear that her friend was alive and okay!!
