From Middle to High School

Transitioning from middle school to high school is a critical moment in every student’s life. Although this milestone can be very exciting, it can also cause students to experience certain challenges. Having to adapt to a new building, teachers and friends can all be considered stressors. It’s no secret that young people experience stress. High school comes with new responsibilities and a new level of independence that all of us have experienced. It is important for students to recognize that there are healthy ways to cope with change. When focusing on how to prepare for this transition, there are a few tips that can help create a smooth process.

The family & teen blog, Love to Know, published an article with the following tips on preparing for the transition from middle school to high school.

1.      Visiting the school before classes begin will allow students to explore their new school, find their classes and possibly meet their teachers. Parents and students should take advantage of any open house/orientation opportunities that their school has to offer.

2.      Getting involved and staying involved is a great way for parents and students to become more comfortable with their new school. Students who participate in extracurricular activities have the opportunity to get to know other students and faculty. Parents who are engaged in PTA/PTO meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and other family engagement opportunities are more likely to stay updated on school news and their child’s progress.

3.       Learning Time Management is a great way to prepare for the middle to high school transition. Take some time out in the summer to begin practicing time management skills at home. A week before school starts, try going to bed at a reasonable hour to practice getting a good night’s rest.

In addition to the tips listed above, it can also be beneficial to connect emerging high school students to their school counselors and therapist. The more students know about the resources available within their school, the more they may be encouraged to utilize those services.
